What I wanted to do most was see the studio backlot tour. So I gave this one a quick fail and we were off to a bad start. Which is probably ok, but when the effect is meant to accompany something hitting you in the face, it kind of doesn’t make sense. Everything is spitting something at you, while the air is this high pressure jolt of air in the back of your head. After a while it stops being clever, and starts getting annoying. The seats move around quite a bit, violently in fact. Meanwhile, the physical effects in your seat in no way enhance what you’re seeing on screen. It’s practically a sequel to the first film. The pre-show was a good 5 minutes at least, with the show itself being another 15-20 minutes. It’s very much like “It’s Tough to be a bug” with the physical effects at your seat. I really want to like the attractions at Universal…REALLY…but this one stinks. Our first stop was Shrek 4D, mostly because it was the first attraction we saw (aside from the House of Horrors, which was not a good fit for our current group). And what is that? It took me a good hour I think to get my legs under me so I could tell the story on video. I also didn’t know what to say! I’m standing there with my camera in hand and ready to record and I’m like…there’s something. I knew none of that, and it threw me for a bit of a loop. At Disneyland, I know where I am, I know where things are, and I know exactly how to get there. It’s just that I’ve naturally grown used to knowing exactly where I am at all times. It’s not that Universal is a confusing place to be. We arrived shortly after the gates opened at 9:00 am and I immediately felt lost. With that aside, I do want to say that we had quite a lot of fun at Universal. With that, Fresh Baked brings you our Universal Studios Hollywood trip report as told through the eyes of a Disney geek. And as such all other parks will suffer in comparison. Nothing has ever, or will ever, compare to Disneyland. Fresh Baked Disney took a detour last weekend and wound up in Universal Studios Hollywood! This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now, and we finally made the time to take the tribe and some friends to see how it’s done in LA.
